The CCSRC is committed to generating
dialogue between parties with an interest in the resolution
of resource based conflict. Through conferences, e-discussions
and workshops, CCSRC will work to increase public awareness
of the issues surrounding resource conflict.
Research Projects
CSR in the Canadian Extractive Sector
In September 2006 the CCSRC completed a comprehensive research project that focused on major
and junior mining companies registered or with a head
office in Canada.
Undertaken following a demonstration of interest by
Foreign Affairs Canada, and in response to the Fourteenth
Report of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs
and International Trade, the project is a survey of
the operations of Canadian mining companies operating
beyond Canada's borders.

The Centre is currently pursuing funding for two new projects:
Case Studies in the Canadian Extractive Sector
African Case Studies
In May of 2005, members of the CCSRC visited the operations of a Canadian company in Uganda, finding that the company had a significant and distinctly positive impact on the community. Located in an area of high economic vulnerability, the mine was eliminating extreme poverty, improving food security and increasing access to healthcare and education.
This project will examine how an inclusive and consultative management approach, which incorporates human rights standards and best practises, can make foreign direct investment highly beneficial for local communities.
GIS & Resource Conflict
The centre is currently engaged in discussions with an international human rights organization that studies the association between rights violations and the environment in the country of Burma. The centre is proposing to partner with the organization in order to analyze the pattern of human rights violations and resource extraction activity through the creation of a spatial and temporal database.
